June 29–July 17

Participate in a research project around the topic of Viking Age
harbours, with excavations of houses and landing places for ships
from Iron Age to Middle Ages. The project is led by Associate
Professor Dan Carlsson who has extensive experience of archaeology on Gotland.


The course is 3 weeks long and dedicated to beginners as well as more experienced diggers from Sweden and elsewhere. Activities include fieldwork, lectures and excursions. Working languages is
Swedish and English.

How to sign up for the course

  • Your adress 
  • Your date of birth
  • What accommodation do you want during the course
  • Specify if you need a special diet

After your application has been received, we will send a confirmation by email.

All students are considered preliminarily accepted until the final payment has been registered with us. Please note that there might be a time difference as we operate from Sweden.

Who can sign up?

To apply, you do not need to have any previous excavation experience as the course is set at a beginner's level. We encourage college or university students of all levels to apply.

We do, however, have an age limit of 18. This means you have to be born 2007 or earlier to take the course in 2026. 

Cancellation

If you cancel no later than 4 weeks before the start of the course, the course fee will be refunded except for a cancellation fee of SEK 5000.

Exceptions to this are made if you become ill, then a medical certificate is required, when we receive this, the course fee will be refunded except for an administration fee of SEK 500.

Canceled cource

Gotlands folkhögskola reserves the right to cancel the course in the event of too few registrations. If the school has to cancel a course, the  paid fees will be refunded.

Accomondation

As a cours parcparticipant, you have full board. That includes accommodation and all meals; breakfast, morning coffee, lunch, afternoon coffee, dinner and evening coffee. 

Sheets and towels are included.

    The total fee is SEK 31 050

    • Course fee: SEK 15 450 (including lunch, dinner and morning & afternoon coffee).
    • Accommodation: SEK 15 600  (including sheets, towels and breakfast)

    Accommodation Sunday June 28 until Saturday July 18. (Please note that you have access to your room from 3:00 PM the day before the course starts and the night after the course ends).
